Museum of the Peace Corps Experience will sponsor a documentary about Lillian Carter’s service and life on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 PM (Eastern). Lillian Carter left for India in 1966 where she celebrated her 70th birthday near Mumbai as a Peace Corps nurse. The film, “Miss Lillian: More than a President’s Mother,” will be shown at the REACH auditorium of the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
When her son Jimmy Carter was inaugurated President of the United States in 1977, Lillian Carter became one of the most famous returned Peace Corps volunteers in the history of the agency.
This “docudrama” tells the story of the family matriarch of Plains, Georgia, through the words of well-known figures during the Carter era — former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, baseball legend Tommy Lasorda, correspondent Sam Donaldson, and (of course) Lillian’s son Jimmy. It is an inspiring account of Lillian Carter’s compassion, her commitment to racial justice, and her dedication to humanitarian service.
“Miss Lillian: More Than a President’s Mother” features co-author/actress Carol Swarbrick portraying Lillian Carter, who died in 1983 at age 85. Joe Kennedy III will introduce the film virtually and a Q & A with the film’s actress and producers will follow the screening.
