Dayton, OH – The Museum of the Peace Corps Experience (MPCE), in collaboration with the International Peace Museum, is proud to announce the launch of Ubuntu in Action: Exploring The Peace Corps and Shared Humanity, a temporary exhibit opening January 31, 2025, and running through April 2025. MPCE is mounting the temporary exhibit as part of the International Peace Museum’s annual Season of Nonviolence, a program dedicated to promoting peace and nonviolence in honor of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The exhibit’s title, Ubuntu in Action, highlights the Southern African philosophy of Ubuntu, which translates to “I am because we are.” Ubuntu embodies interconnectedness, shared humanity, and community—values that are at the heart of the Peace Corps mission. This philosophy is exemplified in the transformative experiences of Peace Corps Volunteers who work side-by-side with host country nationals in an effort to address social inequality and build bridges between cultures.
Visitors will encounter an exploration of Ubuntu in the Peace Corps call to service, artifacts from the everyday lives of volunteers, and material culture from the Peace Corps’ vibrant alumni community. Interactive community art installations will invite audiences to engage with the exhibit by depicting cross-cultural learning and articulating their own intentions for peace. Portraiture and video installations featuring the Peace Corps rich history of citizen diplomacy further highlight the theme of human interdependence. Together, these elements create an immersive experience that underscores the collective impact of peacebuilding and the transformative potential of community arts.
A Season for Nonviolence: Running from January 30 to April 4, 2025, the Season of Nonviolence commemorates the lives and legacies of Gandhi and King. This national campaign underscores the power of nonviolence to heal, transform, and empower communities. The International Peace Museum and the Museum of the Peace Corps Experience invite the general public to visit the exhibit and engage in a series of events (see website for details) in order to center peacebuilding in the public discourse.
