Posting Peace; Peace Corps Posters 1961-2022

Iconic Calls to Join the Peace Corps

When you thought about joining the Peace Corps, were you responding to the poster: Make America a Better Place: Leave the Country? Those edgy Peace Corps posters set a tone and helped inspire more than 240,000 Americans to see How Much You Can Give and to Go In Peace by joining the Peace Corps.

Museum of the Peace Corps Experience exhibited 50 Peace Corps posters in 2022 at ArtReach Gallery, Portland, Oregon. Dr. Sheldon Hurst, Gallery Director, curated “Posting Peace; Peace Corps Posters 1961-2022” and edited the exhibit catalog.

Why Peace Corps posters?

Peace Corps began with a vision from civil rights activists and students; President John F. Kennedy brought the vision to life in 1961. Sargent Shriver, Founding Director, gave shape to the effort that has sent over 240,000 volunteers to work in 142 countries throughout the world. The posters in this exhibition call attention to Peace Corps and service. Words and images combine to inspire people about ways they themselves can cultivate peace. Countries invite the United States to send volunteers who work with host communities in education, health care, agriculture, and social and economic development. Building peace together transforms volunteers and host communities alike. Returned Peace Corps volunteers and collectors in Washington, D.C., Oregon, California, Illinois, and other states donated or lent posters to the exhibition, co-sponsored by Museum of the Peace Corps Experience, ArtReach Gallery at First Congregational UCC, Portland Peace Corps Association, and National Peace Corps Association.
